Project Matador's jobs numbers, and where they come from
Amarillo Ledger ·
A plain-language summary of records on this site. Every figure is on the linked pages, with its source.
Project Matador has been sold on jobs: "over 9,000" at peak, in Fermi's projections as reported by the Amarillo Tribune.
Here's what the deals actually require. Carson County's tax abatement, which waives 100% of County taxes for ten years per phase, requires 40 full-time jobs per phase. If all 15 phases were built, that's 600. Phase 1 has to be operating by Dec. 31, 2027, a date that can be extended to 2032.
The NRC's environmental review, using Fermi's numbers for the reactors alone, estimates 1,290 direct jobs once they're running.
The larger numbers may come true. But the 40 per phase is the only number in the record anyone can enforce. Everything above that is a promise.
