Council designates Reinvestment Zone No. 24 in the South Georgia Business Park on first reading, 3-2
After a public hearing at which one resident spoke against the item, the council voted 3-2 on the first reading of Ordinance No. 8130. The ordinance designates about 20 acres at Augustus Drive and South Georgia Street, in the AEDC's South Georgia Business Park, as Reinvestment Zone No. 24, a step required before the council can offer a tax abatement there. Josh Craft and Tom Scherlen voted no. Staff said the zone would give the council the option of offering an incentive to a prospective manufacturing facility.[1][2]

The staff memo states that designating a reinvestment zone is required under Chapter 312 of the Tax Code before the council can offer a tax abatement. The 20-acre zone is at Augustus Drive and South Georgia Street, and 'the reason for creating this zone is to provide Council the option to offer an economic development incentive to a prospective manufacturing facility.' AEDC staff recommended the designation.[2]
