Council awards $655,830 kennel renovation for half of the shelter
On its consent agenda, approved 4-0 with one member absent, the council awarded Plains Builders, Inc. a $655,830 contract (TexBuy cooperative) for demolition and installation of new kennel fronts, tops, sliding doors and related work for half of the facility, funded from general fund revenues. NewsChannel 10 reported that the department's interim director said the shelter was built in the 1970s and needed daily kennel repairs; the remaining buildings would be addressed when funding allows.[1][2]

Interim Director of Animal Management and Welfare; Councilmember Les Simpson: The interim director told NewsChannel 10, "Our shelter was constructed in the 1970s and so clearly we have some failing and some aging infrastructure," and said new stainless-steel kennels would "reduce stress for the animals" and "keep the staff safer." Councilmember Les Simpson said the upgrades would "provide a safer environment where people aren't tripping or falling." [2]
