Council weighs a $777,000 low bid to demolish the condemned Inn of Amarillo
KFDA reported on March 22, 2017 that the lowest bid to demolish the Inn of Amarillo, a former Route 66 motel at 601 W. Amarillo Blvd. condemned in 2010, was $777,000, almost $600,000 of it for asbestos removal. The owner did not have the money to tear the building down, and the city manager suggested paying for it by issuing certificates of obligation or borrowing from the general fund. A council vote was expected the following week. An example of a City-paid demolition of a condemned property before the current program.[1][2]
