Council grants S.E.A. Market a school-distance variance for beer and wine sales, 5-0
S.E.A. Market, a grocery store near 34th Avenue and Georgia Street, sought to sell Asian beer and wine and had been denied an alcohol business license because it is about 17.5 feet from Coronado Elementary School. Staff reported that Amarillo ISD supported the variance. The council passed Ordinance No. 8172 5-0 on first reading on December 10, 2024 and on the consent agenda, 5-0, on January 14, 2025.[1][2][3]

The staff memo said S.E.A. Market operates a grocery store and proposed to sell Asian beer and wine; it had been denied an alcohol business license because the site is about 17.5 feet from Coronado Elementary School, short of the 300-foot separation. Two other licensed locations already sat within 300 feet of the school (one licensed in 2004 and one granted a variance on November 28, 2017). The memo said earlier variance requests in the same shopping center failed 2-3 on October 3, 2003 and 0-3 on October 27, 2020. Staff reported that Amarillo ISD said by email it would support the variance; no staff recommendation was given. [2]
